Keynote Announced! Join us as David A. Cook, MD, MHPE, Professor of Medicine and Medical Education at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine presents, "Reconsidering Outcomes Research in Health Professions Education: A Cautionary Tale." 

Given the growing focus on educational outcomes, and in particular the desire for outcomes showing benefit to patients, it seems timely to pause and reflect on this movement. In this session, Dr. Cook will consider broad but important questions about the measurement of educational outcomes. He'll discuss the dangers of an exclusive focus on educational outcomes in research and program evaluation, and emphasize potential pitfalls in the use of patient outcomes. He'll also suggest approaches that balance the advantages and disadvantages of the various options available. 

The Keynote presentation for the 2019 Health Sciences Education Symposium on March 20, will start at 12 Noon in McGlothlin Medical Education Center (MMEC) 3rd floor Learning Theater. All members of the VCU community including fellows, housestaff & Inova and VAMC faculty are invited.

The Health Sciences Education Symposium will celebrate educational scholarship across the continuum of health sciences education.  Join fellow  educators, leaders, and learners to promote the scholarship of teaching and learning.  All submissions will receive peer-reviewed feedback from at least two reviewers. Works-in-progress will be considered provided sufficient evidence demonstrates viability of the approach.

Program Goals:

• Share health science educational innovations and scholarship occurring at VCU.
• Provide a forum for presentation, discussion, and feedback for scholarly work to advance new and ongoing education research.
• Network with faculty, trainees, and students interested in promoting educational excellence.
• Recognize opportunities for mindful practice in teaching, learning, and patient care.
