Lunchtime Learning: Know Your Copyrights In-Person
Presenter: Hillary Miller, Scholarly Communications Librarian
A researcher asks for a copy of your latest article; is it okay to send one over email? ResearchGate prompts you to add the article to your profile; are you allowed to post it online? Publishing contracts can place restrictions on how authors can use and share their publications. However, traditional journals are increasingly expanding the rights that authors keep without the need to negotiate, and open access journals give authors even more expansive rights over their publications. By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Identify rights that authors may lose or keep in publishing contracts
- Compare author rights policies in standard journal contracts and open access journal contracts
- Determine the situations and platforms where authors are allowed to share their publications
